Bonnie Schneider
Following my graduation from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963), but subsequently witnessing the liberal arts in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75) I'm an advocate for education that incorporates studies in the arts and studies of other fields. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist with obtained an MA in 1967 and an Ph.D. from UCLA. It is not surprising that the department of ethnomusicology is located at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is located in the college of letters and Sciences' Department of Music. The possibility of pursuing multiple areas of interest is something that I truly appreciate. It's a pleasure to teach both graduate and undergraduate students. I am an published with three of my books published: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing Cultural Expression and Music. There are times when I focus on primarily teaching along with times when I incorporate administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group on Asian Studies Since 1999 and currently as Chair of the Department of Music again).
